Changing Lives at Both Ends of the Leash: The Heart Behind the Soul

"Two lost souls. One simple idea. A bond that changes everything."

Dixie — the sweet dog who inspired the Heart Behind the Soul Initiative

Dixie — the soul who started it all. 🐾

There is a moment that stays with you.

For us, it was watching our 89-year-old mother navigate the beautiful, heartbreaking journey of caring for her beloved dog, Dixie. Rescued from the Davidson County Animal Shelter, Dixie lived 20 beautiful years with Momma — a testament to just how much love a senior dog has to give. Together, they faced the tough realities of canine aging — night-stalking, incontinence, deafness, vision loss. And through every single obstacle, their bond of unconditional love kept them both moving forward.

Momma and Dixie — a bond of a lifetime. 💛

This past December, Dixie crossed the rainbow bridge after living a long, beautiful life.

What followed was a heavy, quiet house. And a deep, aching loneliness for our mother that no phone call or visit could fully fill. She longs for companionship. And right now, there are thousands of gentle senior dogs sitting in shelter cages who desperately need a warm home.

So what is stopping them from finding each other?

Where It All Began — Momma's Kitchen

Long before Bowwow Pet Care existed, there was Momma's kitchen. A place where love was measured in mixing bowls, where recipes were handwritten on worn index cards, and where Dixie sat patiently at her feet waiting for a taste of whatever was being made.

Those recipes — filled with wholesome, simple ingredients — became the foundation of everything. At 89 years young, Momma still handwrites every one of them herself. Her secret ingredient has never changed: LOVE. You can hold a piece of that legacy in your hands today with Momma's Favorite Recipes — 20 handwritten cards for 20 years of Dixie.

Those same recipes inspired our small-batch senior dog treats, our cookbook Nutrition for the Aging Soul, and a mission bigger than any product we could ever sell.

The Barriers Are Real — And We Can Remove Them

When an older adult considers adopting a pet, they face overwhelming, real-world anxieties that stall the decision entirely:

  • The Financial Burden: "How will I afford quality dog food and rising medical expenses on a fixed retirement income?"
  • The "What-Ifs": "What happens to my beloved dog if I have to relocate to a care facility, or if I pass away?"

These fears leave seniors isolated and senior dogs without homes. We refuse to accept this as the status quo.

Meet Bandit — And the Team Behind the Mission

Every great mission needs a mascot. Meet Bandit — our big, lovable, brown and white bulldog mascot who will be showing up at senior centers, living facilities, and rescue meet-and-greet events across our community. Bandit represents the joy, the warmth, and the pure happiness that happens when a senior citizen and a senior dog find each other.

Our Phase 1 community events will include joyful rescue meet-and-greets where seniors can spend time with adoptable dogs in a relaxed, welcoming setting — and Momma's cooking classes at senior centers, teaching participants how to make wholesome homemade treats for their new companions.

The Heart Behind the Soul Initiative — Phase 1

We are launching our Phase 1 Pilot Program with a fundraising goal of $100,000 to fully fund:

  • 50 Fully-Sponsored Adoptions — $1,500 covers an entire first year together: adoption fees, 12 months of food, routine vet checkups, and starter wellness supplies.
  • An Emergency Veterinary Medical Cushion — So no senior citizen ever faces financial panic over an unexpected surgery.
  • Community Center Outreach — Meet-and-greet events and Momma's cooking demonstrations at senior living facilities.
  • The Forever Promise — Legal safety nets guaranteeing that if a senior citizen can no longer care for their pet, the dog instantly transitions into a loving, pre-arranged home.
